Galleries & Museums Galway

Galway offers visitors to Ireland a glimpse into the country’s rich history and culture. As an important trading center during the Middle Ages, Galway attracted merchants and craftsmen from across Europe.
Galway is also known for its thriving arts scene. The city is home to numerous galleries, theaters, and museums that showcase local and international talent. One of the most prominent events in the Galway cultural calendar is the Galway International Arts Festival, which attracts thousands of visitors each year.

Galway City Museum is an award-winning cultural venue located in the heart of Galway. It showcases the history and heritage of Galway and is divided into several galleries, each representing different aspects of Galway’s past, from its prehistoric roots to the modern era. Visitors can explore the archeological treasures of the Galway region, learn about the city’s maritime heritage, traditions, language, and music. The museum has a vibrant program of temporary exhibitions, educational workshops, and cultural events for all ages.

One of the smallest museums you’re likely to come across, the Galway Fisheries Watchtower museum is dedicated to Galway’s rich history of river fishing throughout the years. Located at one end of Wolf-Tone bridge the museum is easily located and well worth the stop.

While undoubtedly one of the most recognisable building in Galway City, Lynches castle is also easily missed by any visitors. It currently houses an AIB bank but the gothic style facade, dating from the 16th century, is well preserved, with information panels located inside the ground floor doors. Lynch’s castle is well worth a stop for those with an architectural soft spot.

The Kenny Gallery has transformed over a number of decades. Starting as a simple bookshop in the 1940s it is today the largest commercial gallery in Ireland. Today the Kenny Gallery specialises in Contemporary Irish Art, exhibits the work of 19th and 20th century artists, and frequently hosts exhibitions by visiting artists from Europe and the United States

Galway Arts Centre is one of the counties leading art institutions. It boasts local, national and international artistic works, exhibitions, all in addition to writing,  photography, and workshops in drama, music and voice.
